Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler criticises Arsenal’s David Raya for time-wasting after 1-0 defeat, sparking debate over Premier League tactics.
Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler delivered a fiery post-match criticism of Arsenal’s approach following their 1-0 victory at the Amex Stadium, singling out goalkeeper David Raya for what he described as blatant time-wasting.
Bukayo Saka’s early deflected strike proved decisive, extending Arsenal’s lead atop the Premier League to seven points. However, Hurzeler’s ire centred on what he saw as excessive gamesmanship from the Gunners.
“There was only one team who tried to play football today,” Hurzeler said. “I ask one question – did you ever see in a Premier League game the goalkeeper going down three times?”
The Brighton boss claimed that Raya repeatedly went to ground for treatment, while Arsenal players deliberately slowed corners, throw-ins, and free-kicks whenever they held the lead. He argued that the Premier League should implement stricter rules against such behaviour.
Fabian Hurzeler urged the league to consider enforcing yellow cards for time-wasting and adding more stoppage time to compensate.
“At the moment they just can do what they want… they make their own rules,” he said. “There has to be a limit, and the limit has to be set by referees.”
He added, “I will never be that kind of manager who tries to win in that way. I want players who keep playing football on the pitch.”
Arteta Unfazed by Complaints
Despite the criticism, Mikel Arteta remained unbothered when addressing the media.
“What a surprise! You can go back to our previous games and you will always find comments like that,” he said. “I love my players and the way we compete. That’s the headline.”
The Arsenal manager’s calm response contrasted sharply with Hurzeler’s intense post-match rant, which also included a heated touchline exchange during the first half.
Brighton dominated possession and created multiple chances, including a controversial first-half penalty appeal turned down by VAR. Arsenal, by contrast, managed just one shot on target but secured the crucial three points thanks to Saka’s early goal.
The victory keeps Arsenal firmly in the title race, while Brighton continues to fight for a top-half finish.

The Debate Over Gamesmanship
Hurzeler’s comments reignite the broader debate over time-wasting and tactical gamesmanship in modern football. Fans and pundits are divided: some argue strategic delays are part of elite-level competition, while others see it as unsporting.
For now, the Premier League has not indicated any immediate response, but the topic is certain to remain in focus as the title race intensifies.
