Alan Shearer Backs Viktor Gyokeres to Regain Form at Arsenal

Alan Shearer Arsenal prediction

Alan Shearer predicts Viktor Gyokeres will rediscover his scoring form at Arsenal but warns fans not to expect his Sporting Lisbon goal record.

Arsenal hard-fought 1-0 win over Fulham may have kept them at the top of the Premier League table, but much of the post-match talk focused on Viktor Gyokeres form and his ongoing goal drought. The Swedish striker, signed for £64 million from Sporting CP, has now gone seven games without scoring.

Despite this slump, Premier League legend Alan Shearer believes the 27-year-old will soon find his rhythm and start scoring again.

Shearer’s Take on Viktor Gyokeres

Speaking on BBC’s Match of The Day after Arsenal’s victory, Shearer praised Gyokeres’ early impact—three goals in his first four league games—but urged patience from supporters.

“He’ll start scoring again,” Shearer said. “But he’ll get nowhere near that record from Portugal.”

The former Newcastle striker was referring to Gyokeres’ extraordinary 54-goal season at Sporting Lisbon. Shearer explained that replicating such a tally in the Premier League’s high-intensity environment would be unrealistic.

He also noted the criticism Gyokeres has faced for missed chances, including a close-range opportunity against Fulham, which highlighted his current lack of confidence in front of goal.

Arsenal’s Set-Piece Dependence

Arsenal’s winner against Fulham once again came from a set piece — their tenth set-piece goal this season, compared to just five from open play. This growing reliance on dead-ball situations has prompted debate among pundits about Arsenal’s attacking balance.

Still, Shearer believes Gyokeres’ movement and strength are already adding value to Mikel Arteta’s system.

“He gives defenders a hard time, makes runs, and creates space,” Shearer added. “Once he gets one goal, more will follow.”

Arsenal remain three points clear of Manchester City, with Liverpool still in close pursuit. As the title race intensifies, Arteta will be hoping Gyokeres can soon find his finishing touch to ease pressure on set plays and help diversify Arsenal’s goal sources.

For Gyokeres, Shearer’s backing serves as reassurance amid growing scrutiny. While fans shouldn’t expect another record-breaking season, the consensus among experts is clear — Viktor Gyokeres has the talent and mentality to succeed in North London.
