Former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has opened up about his recent discussions with the club regarding a potential return before ultimately deciding to retire from professional football. The Polish international, who enjoyed a successful career spanning over 16 years, shared his thoughts on why the move back to the Emirates Stadium didn’t materialize.

Szczesny, who joined Arsenal’s academy in 2006 and made 181 appearances for the first team, admitted that the idea of returning to his former club was driven by sentiment and respect. He told Polish outlet Meczyki: “Sentiment kicked in and I was open to talks with Arsenal out of respect for the club. But when I started them, I knew it wasn’t for me. The Arsenal option came up before the Juventus contract was terminated. I said, ‘OK, we can talk.’ But two days later I said it didn’t make much sense.”

One of the main reasons Szczesny decided against the return was the logistical challenges involved. “It was all about logistics. Something very significant would have to happen for this move to happen,” he explained. Despite the emotional pull, Szczesny felt that the practicalities of the move didn’t align with his current situation.

Arsenal made considerable efforts to bring Szczesny back, even considering him for a dual role that included coaching responsibilities. The club saw him as a perfect backup goalkeeper and a valuable addition to their coaching staff. However, Szczesny’s heart was no longer in professional football, and he decided to retire instead.
