William Saliba has hailed former Real Madrid defender, Sergio Ramos, as the greatest in history. Ramos not only enjoyed remarkable success with Real Madrid but was also an integral part of the Spanish national team that achieved international dominance.

Arsenal’s William Saliba has hailed legendary former Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos as the “best defender in history.” The Frenchman, who has been making waves in the Premier League, spoke highly of Ramos’ illustrious career and his impact on the game.

Saliba’s admiration for Ramos comes as no surprise, given the Spaniard’s remarkable achievements during his 16-year tenure at Real Madrid. Ramos, known for his combative style and leadership qualities, played a pivotal role in the club’s success, winning numerous domestic and international titles, including four UEFA Champions League trophies.

Reflecting on his encounter with Ramos during Arsenal’s clash against Sevilla last season, Saliba recalled how he eagerly sought the Spanish defender’s shirt. “I wanted his shirt, but Gabriel also wanted it so badly. So I gave it to Gabriel,” Saliba shared. “For me, he’s the best in history. And there are some others, like Van Dijk for me, who is unbelievable”.

The Arsenal star reserved special praise for Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, calling him “the best in the world right now.” This nod to the Dutch defender underscores Saliba’s appreciation for contemporary excellence in the Premier League, where he’s currently honing his craft.

Since joining Liverpool in 2018, Van Dijk has transformed the Reds’ defense, bringing a level of composure and dominance that’s rare in the modern game. His highlights include:

  • 2019 UEFA Champions League title
  • 2020 Premier League title A reputation as one of the toughest defenders to beat one-on-one

“Van Dijk’s consistency is unreal,” Saliba remarked. “His aerial dominance, positioning, and ability to read the game are incredible.” Saliba, who has faced Van Dijk on the pitch, understands the challenge of facing the 6’4″ colossus. Yet, he views these encounters as a learning opportunity, a chance to measure himself against the best.

Saliba’s nod to Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk highlights the Dutchman’s exceptional defensive prowess in the Premier League. Van Dijk, who has played a key role in Liverpool’s recent success, is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the modern game.
