Wayne Rooney recommends Arsenal to try and hijack Manchester United’s move for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has publicly urged Arsenal to hijack Manchester United’s move for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. The 27-year-old forward has been in scintillating form for Crystal Palace, scoring 34 goals in all competitions over the past two seasons.
Rooney, who has always been vocal about his opinions on football matters, believes that Mateta could be the solution to Arsenal’s striker woes. The Gunners have struggled to find a consistent goal-scorer this season, with injuries and lack of form plaguing their attacking options. Rooney’s endorsement of Mateta comes at a time when Arsenal are desperately seeking reinforcements to bolster their squad and challenge for the Premier League title.
“Jean-Philippe Mateta is a big, strong lad who scores a lot of goals,” Rooney told BBC Sport. “From watching Arsenal over the past few games in the Premier League, they have put a lot of balls into the box without having anyone to get on the end of them. I am sure he would help from that point of view”
Mateta, who joined Crystal Palace from Mainz in 2022, initially struggled to make an impact at Selhurst Park. However, under the guidance of manager Oliver Glasner, the French Olympian has flourished, becoming one of the most sought-after strikers in the Premier League. His impressive performances have not gone unnoticed, with Manchester United reportedly opening talks to sign him.
Despite Manchester United’s interest, Rooney believes that Arsenal should make a move for Mateta. The Gunners have been linked with several strikers in recent months, but Rooney insists that Mateta would be the perfect fit for Mikel Arteta’s side. “Failing to sign a new centre forward and an untimely injury crisis at the Emirates Stadium has left Mikel Arteta desperately short up top,” Rooney said. “Mateta would help Arsenal address their striker issues and provide the firepower they need to compete at the top of the Premier League”.
With the summer transfer window approaching, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal will heed Rooney’s advice and make a move for Mateta. The £40m price tag may seem steep, but for a player of Mateta’s calibre, it could be a worthwhile investment for the Gunners.
