Viktor Gyökeres Arsenal Medical booked as striker prepares to wear iconic No. 14 shirt in landmark transfer.
Arsenal have officially reached a total agreement with Sporting CP to sign prolific Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres, according to The Athletic, with the player scheduled to undergo a medical this Saturday ahead of a £63.7 million move from Sporting CP.
The 27-year-old goal machine, who netted an astonishing 97 goals and 28 assists in 102 appearances for Sporting, has agreed to a five-year contract with the Gunners. His arrival marks Arsenal’s first traditional striker signing since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in 2018.
Gyökeres is expected to wear the No. 14 shirt, a number etched into Arsenal folklore thanks to club legend Thierry Henry. The shirt has since been worn by Theo Walcott, Aubameyang, and most recently Eddie Nketiah, but none have quite matched Henry’s towering legacy of 228 goals.
Choosing this number is seen as a bold statement of intent. With his preferred No. 9 already taken by Gabriel Jesus, Gyökeres reportedly opted for 14 as a nod to Arsenal’s rich goalscoring heritage.
The transfer, worth £63.7 million including £8.7 million in add-ons, follows weeks of tense negotiations between Arsenal and Sporting CP. The final agreement includes more achievable performance-based clauses, allowing the deal to move forward.
Gyökeres received written authorization from Sporting to travel to London, and if all goes smoothly, he will join Arsenal’s squad for their upcoming pre-season tour in Asia.
