VfB Stuttgart Pursue Arsenal’s Fabio Vieira in Strategic Summer Move to Bolster Midfield Creativity
VfB Stuttgart Pursue Arsenal’s Fabio Vieira as the Bundesliga side intensifies efforts to sign the Portuguese midfielder in a permanent move ahead of the new season.
According to reports from The Athletic, Stuttgart have initiated discussions with their Premier League counterparts, signaling their intent to bolster their squad with the creative midfielder as they prepare for the 2025/26 Bundesliga season.
Vieira, who joined Arsenal from FC Porto in the summer of 2022 for an initial €35 million (approximately £30 million) plus €5 million in add-ons, has struggled to cement a regular place in Mikel Arteta’s squad.
Despite showing flashes of his technical quality, the midfielder’s time at Arsenal has been hampered by limited game time and injury setbacks. In his debut season with the Gunners, Vieira made 22 Premier League appearances, but his involvement dwindled in the following campaign, culminating in a season-long loan back to Porto for the 2024/25 season.
During his loan spell at Porto, Vieira featured regularly, making 26 appearances in Liga Portugal and contributing five goals and six assists across 42 matches in all competitions.
While these numbers reflect a solid campaign, Porto opted not to pursue a permanent deal, citing Vieira’s high salary and performances that, while respectable, did not fully convince the club’s hierarchy to commit to a long-term signing. Vieira returns to Arsenal after his loan ends, but his future at the Emirates Stadium remains uncertain.
The Reasons Behind German Interest
Stuttgart’s interest in Vieira comes at a pivotal moment for both the player and the club. The Bundesliga side, who have been active in the transfer market, are looking to strengthen their squad under manager Sebastian Hoeneß as they aim to build on their recent successes.
Having secured a third-place finish in the 2023/24 Bundesliga season and a return to European competition, Stuttgart are keen to add depth and creativity to their midfield. Vieira, with his vision, technical ability, and experience at both Porto and Arsenal, could provide the attacking spark Stuttgart are seeking.
Negotiations between Stuttgart and Arsenal are ongoing, with no agreement yet reached. The Gunners intend to demand a reasonable fee for Vieira, who is in the final two years of his contract at the Emirates.

The Gunners, who paid a significant sum to acquire him in 2022, are likely to seek a figure close to the £30 million they initially invested, though they may have to accept a slight loss given Vieira’s struggles to break into the first team.
The rise of young talent Ethan Nwaneri and the established presence of Martin Ødegaard in Arsenal’s playmaking roles further diminish Vieira’s prospects of regular minutes in North London, making a permanent exit a plausible outcome.
