Tim Sherwood insists Aston Villa lack the depth to sustain genuine title hopes against Arsenal and Manchester City.
Tim Sherwood has poured cold water on Aston Villa title hopes, arguing that despite their stunning run of form, the Premier League race remains firmly between Arsenal and Manchester City. Speaking after a decisive weekend at the top of the table, Sherwood suggested Villa’s surge is impressive — but unsustainable over a full title campaign.
Arsenal remain top of the Premier League after surviving a tense 2–1 victory over Wolves at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners were pushed to the edge by the league’s bottom side, relying on two late own goals to secure all three points.
Sherwood described Arsenal’s performance as “edgy” and warned that such displays could resurface later in the season, even if champions often need to win games “the ugly way.”
Manchester City Deliver Statement Performance
Manchester City responded in ruthless fashion, dismantling Crystal Palace 3–0 at Selhurst Park. Erling Haaland struck twice as Pep Guardiola’s side underlined why they remain the benchmark in title races.
For Sherwood, City’s composure and experience remain decisive advantages — especially when pressure increases during the run-in.
Despite Aston Villa extending their winning streak with a dramatic 3–2 comeback against West Ham, Sherwood believes their title hopes will eventually fade.
“They might not have the strength in depth,” Sherwood said on Premier League Production. “When it really starts to count, the only team that won’t get edgy is the one that’s been there and done it many times — and that’s Manchester City.”
Unai Emery has transformed Aston Villa into one of the league’s most dangerous sides, with nine straight league wins propelling them into third place. However, Sherwood insists momentum alone cannot bridge the gap to proven title contenders.
According to the former Spurs boss, sustaining belief, managing fatigue, and rotating quality players are areas where Villa still trail Arsenal and Man City.
Sherwood Still Backs Arsenal to Go the Distance
While critical of Arsenal’s nervy display, Sherwood remains confident in Mikel Arteta’s project.
“I’ve liked what I’ve seen from Arsenal this season,” he added. “They have a great manager, a strong squad, and they’re capable of winning it.”
