Mikel Arteta had a fantastic playing career in England before joining Arsenal as a manager.

Former Everton goalkeeper and ex-Mikel Arteta teammate, Tim Howard, has revealed a fascinating insight into the Spaniard’s journey from his playing days at Goodison Park to becoming the head coach at Arsenal.

During his time at Everton, Tim Howard saw Arteta’s intensity up close, hinting at his potential for success in top-level management. In a detailed piece for The Daily Mail, Howard highlights the difference in Arteta’s demeanor before and during interviews: “I’ve interviewed him as a manager several times, and before the cameras start rolling, it’s like the old days; he calls me Timmy, and there’s plenty of smiles and giggling.”

Howard, who played alongside Arteta for 152 games at Everton, shared his perspective on the transformation he has witnessed in Arteta. “Mikel was always meticulous, studying film and talking tactics even on the bus,” Howard recalled. “He took soccer very seriously and was someone we all looked up to, to mirror your lifestyle on,” he added.

Arteta’s dedication and seriousness about the game were evident even during his playing days, and it’s no surprise that he has carried those qualities into his coaching career. Howard also noted that while Arteta was once his friend and teammate, he has now become a figure of authority and respect as a manager.

Reflecting on their time together under David Moyes at Everton, Tim Howard shared fond memories of Mikel Arteta, emphasizing the Spanish midfielder’s dedication and professionalism. “When I first got to Everton, he was one of Moyes’ Crown Jewels. He was far and away our best footballer. He was a really good guy and a really engaging guy. But Mikel was always somebody who took football very, very seriously. There was never an off day,” Howard reminisced.

In team meetings, Mikel Arteta often played a significant role in discussing tactics and explaining key strategies to fellow players. He provided confident insights on positioning and improvements without disagreeing with David Moyes, ensuring everyone’s understanding was aligned.

Arteta’s feedback was straightforward yet respectful, pointing out areas for improvement in a professional manner. His observations were valued and provided many learning moments.

Moyes recognized Arteta’s leadership and tactical abilities, entrusting him with significant responsibilities. Arteta embraced this, acting as the midfield general and technical genius, contributing positively to the team’s success.

Arteta’s commitment to the game was evident to his teammates, setting a standard of excellence and dedication that has clearly carried over into his managerial career at Arsenal.

The insight from Howard provides a unique glimpse into the qualities that have made Arteta successful as a coach and highlights the growth and evolution of his career from a player to a manager.
