Theo Walcott backs Arsenal title hopes and urges calm after Mikel Arteta’s side suffer a rare three-game losing run.
Former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott backs Arsenal title hopes, dismissing fears over their recent dip and insisting ambitions remain firmly on track despite a damaging run of one defeat and two draws in their last three Premier League matches.
Mikel Arteta’s side appeared to be in complete control at the summit until back-to-back draws against Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, and a loss to Manchester United reduced their lead to four points. However, Walcott believes panic is misplaced and remains confident the Gunners can end their long wait for a league crown.
Arsenal’s most recent setback came in a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Manchester United, a match marked by defensive lapses and unfortunate own goals. Goals from Patrick Dorgu and Matheus Cunha exposed rare vulnerabilities in what has otherwise been one of the league’s strongest backlines.
Despite the wobble, Arsenal have still lost just three league matches all season, a statistic Walcott believes should be central to any assessment of their title credentials.
“They’ve lost three games all year. They hadn’t lost for a long period of time,” Walcott told DR Sports.
“I wouldn’t be panicking at all because they’ve been in this position before.”
Why Walcott Still Trusts Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal Project
Walcott stressed that context matters, pointing out that several of Arsenal’s recent opponents were highly motivated and difficult fixtures.
The former England international also reminded supporters that Arteta’s original objective was to keep Arsenal ahead of traditional powerhouses Manchester City and Liverpool — a target the club is still achieving.
“As long as they finish above Liverpool and Manchester City, that was the task at the start of the season,” Walcott explained.
“They’re still doing that now. They’re four points clear.”
He warned that increasing pressure at this stage could disrupt momentum rather than help it.
Walcott acknowledged Arsenal’s relative lack of recent silverware compared to their title rivals.
“The only problem for Arsenal is they’ve not won anything,” he admitted.
“Manchester City and Liverpool carry that experience.”
Still, Walcott draws encouragement from Arsenal’s continued involvement across four competitions, pointing to squad depth and resilience under Arteta.
Looking ahead, Walcott expects the Premier League title race to go down to the wire and believes Arsenal show lasting power rather than late-season collapse.
“I feel like it will go all the way,” he said.
“They’re showing signs for me that they’ll be fine. To lose three games and be nearly into February, it’s not bad.”
With several key players yet to hit peak form, Walcott argued Arsenal can still find another gear as the season enters its decisive phase.
