Theo Walcott is of the opinion that Mikel Arteta has been too conservative in his use of Arsenal’s latest teenage sensation Ethan Nwaneri.
Former Arsenal winger Theo Walcott has voiced his opinion that Mikel Arteta has been too conservative in his use of the club’s latest teenage sensation, Ethan Nwaneri. Walcott, who himself was a teenage star at Arsenal, believes that Nwaneri deserves more playing time given his talent and potential.
Nwaneri made headlines recently by scoring his first Premier League goal in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest. At just 17 years old, he became the second-youngest player to score for the Gunners in the Premier League, showcasing his composure and skill on the big stage.
However, Walcott feels that Arteta has been too cautious with Nwaneri’s development, limiting his opportunities to shine. “Ethan has shown that he has what it takes to make an impact at the highest level,” Walcott said in a recent interview with Sky Sport. “I understand the need to manage young players carefully, but I believe Mikel could afford to take a few more risks with Ethan. He’s ready for more responsibility.”
He’s had a lot more experience playing at the highest level [than I did], he’s been around these players consistently that’s why I just wanted to see a little bit more of him when Odegaard was out. He’s different and Arsenal needed something different to get them through that patch without Odegaard.
‘Odegaard is a magician and he’s not far off of it.’
Walcott’s comments highlight the delicate balance Arteta must strike between nurturing young talent and protecting their long-term development. While the Arsenal manager has emphasized the importance of a gradual approach, Walcott’s perspective suggests that Nwaneri could handle a larger role within the squad.
