Teddy Sheringham Backs Viktor Gyokeres to Shine at Arsenal Despite Early Challenges

Teddy Sheringham backs Viktor Gyokeres to thrive at Arsenal, urging improvement against top clubs after a mixed start.

Arsenal £64 million summer signing Viktor Gyokeres has had a mixed start to life in North London, but he’s earned a vote of confidence from Premier League legend Teddy Sheringham. The former Manchester United and Tottenham striker believes the Swedish forward has the tools to become a prolific scorer for the Gunners—even if his early performances against top-tier opposition have raised eyebrows.

Gyokeres arrived from Sporting CP with high expectations, having dominated the Portuguese league. In his first six appearances for Arsenal, he’s netted three goals, all against lower-ranked sides like Leeds and Nottingham Forest. However, his impact has been muted in marquee matchups against Manchester United, Liverpool, Athletic Club, and Manchester City.

Sheringham’s Take: “He Looks Like the Real Deal”

Speaking to Coin Poker, Sheringham praised Gyokeres’ physicality and goal-scoring instincts:
“Viktor Gyokeres is a very good player. I think he’ll score plenty of goals for Arsenal this season. They’ve lacked an out-and-out striker for years, but Gyokeres looks like the real deal.”

Sheringham highlighted the striker’s aerial presence and right-footed finishing ability, particularly referencing his goal against Leeds at the Emirates. He also noted that Arsenal’s attacking depth—with Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, and Eberechi Eze—could ease the burden on Gyokeres.

Despite his optimism, Sheringham didn’t shy away from pointing out areas for improvement.
“One thing I would say though, is that Gyokeres needs to be doing more against the top sides in the league. Against Liverpool and Man City, I wanted to see more from him, but that will come with time.”

Arteta’s Perspective: Service Matters

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta echoed similar sentiments after Gyokeres’ quiet outing in the 1-1 draw with Manchester City. Arteta emphasized the need for better service:
“There was a lot of very good balls in the box… but the final pass was missing today in many moments.”

With upcoming fixtures against Olympiakos and West Ham, October offers a chance for Gyokeres to build momentum. Whether he can translate his promise into consistent performances against elite competition remains the key question.
