Sol Campbell Predicts Arsenal Could Seek Short-Term Cover in January

Sol Campbell tips Arsenal toward a smart January defensive move as injuries force Arteta to consider a short-term signing.

Former Arsenal icon Sol Campbell believes the Gunners may need January defensive signing to manage their mounting injury problems at centre-back. As Campbell explained, Arsenal’s squad depth is being tested at the worst possible time, especially after the side’s recent 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.

Arsenal remain top of the Premier League, yet the absence of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães made the Villa defeat even tougher to absorb. Campbell stressed how vital their presence is, saying their partnership brings “experience, knowledge and cool heads for big moments.”

He added that Arsenal can cope with injuries elsewhere, but losing both centre-backs at once disrupts their balance and rhythm.

Injuries force Arteta into action

Saliba is expected to return for the upcoming Wolves match, which offers relief. However, Gabriel’s recovery may stretch into late December or January. That timeline leaves Arteta leaning on Jurrien Timber and other backups who lack the seasoned consistency of the first-choice pairing.

With the festive schedule intensifying, Arsenal cannot afford prolonged instability at the back.

Looking toward the winter market, Campbell suggested that Arsenal may pursue a short-term alternative rather than a major signing. He floated the idea of an older defender arriving on a six-month deal or a practical loan.

“Something might happen at the back-end of January. Keep your options open,” Campbell told Paddy Power, encouraging flexibility in Arsenal’s plan.

This aligns with Mikel Arteta’s recent comments that the club will act if the right opportunity arises.

A timely reinforcement could protect title charge

Arsenal are firmly in the Premier League title race, but defensive stability will be crucial to maintaining their lead over Liverpool and Manchester City. Even one smart, temporary addition could offer the security needed to navigate heavy fixtures and injury pressure.

Possible options include free agents, veteran defenders nearing contract expiry, or experienced players available for loan from Europe’s top leagues.

As the window approaches, Arsenal’s transfer activity will draw major attention. A calculated, risk-free move may ultimately prove decisive in their push for silverware. With Saliba returning soon, the foundation remains strong — but Campbell’s warning highlights why extra protection may be essential.
