Arsenal tried to sign Watkins in January, but their attempt was unsuccessful.
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has issued a stern warning to Arsenal regarding their pursuit of Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins. Keane’s comments come in the wake of Arsenal’s failed attempt to sign Watkins during the January transfer window, with a bid of around £40 million reportedly rejected by Aston Villa.
Keane, known for his no-nonsense approach and candid opinions, questioned whether Watkins has the potential to become a top-tier striker at a club like Arsenal. Despite Watkins’ impressive performances for Aston Villa, where he has been one of the most consistent performers in the Premier League, Keane suggested that the striker might have already reached his peak at Villa.
The Villa striker started in his team’s FA Cup victory over Cardiff on Friday night and missed a big first-half chance, poking the ball wide when clean through on goal, prompting Keane to question whether Watkins had found “his level” at Villa.
“I like Watkins, I think he’s a really good player, I think he’s a threat, but maybe this is his level,” Keane remarked. He further added, “I know he’s been linked with other clubs, but sometimes you go ‘maybe you’re not going to be that top, top striker'”.

Watkins, who has scored 19 goals in the league last season and has 12 goals so far in the current campaign, has been a key player for Aston Villa. However, Keane’s comments have cast doubt on whether the 29-year-old forward can make the leap to an elite club like Arsenal.
Arsenal’s interest in Watkins is part of their ongoing efforts to bolster their attacking options. The Gunners have been linked with several strikers as they look to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season. However, Keane’s warning suggests that Arsenal should carefully consider whether Watkins is the right fit for their ambitions.
