Roy Keane has accused Ian Wright of showing a lack of class after the former Arsenal striker described Manchester United as a “mid-table team” during their 2-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night. The heated exchange occurred during The Overlap’s live watchalong, where Keane and Wright were joined by fellow pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher.
The controversy began when Wright, reveling in Arsenal’s victory, referred to Manchester United as a “mid-table team” that had frustrated the Gunners. “I think what we’ve done is we’ve been very patient with a mid-table team that’s come and been very frustrating,” Wright said, laughing as he added, “We just had to get it done with the free kicks and set-pieces.”
Keane, known for his fiery temperament, did not take kindly to Wright’s comments. “Can I ask you, what age are you? You’re a grandfather, sitting there going, ‘mid-table team,’ show some class, show some class,” Keane retorted. Wright defended his remarks, stating, “No, I’m watching my team win, it’s got nothing to do with class, what’s that got to do with class?”
The exchange highlighted the tension between the two former players, with Keane insisting that Wright’s comments were disrespectful. “Show some class… a ‘mid-table team coming to defend,'” Keane reiterated. Wright, however, stood by his comments, pointing out United’s current position in the league and the defensive approach they had taken during the match.
