Rio Ferdinand questions Viktor Gyokeres’ suitability for Manchester United, fueling the latest Gyokeres transfer rumors amid Premier League speculation.
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has expressed doubts about Viktor Gyokeres, the Sporting Lisbon striker who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford. With Gyokeres transfer rumors gaining momentum, Ferdinand believes the Swedish forward may struggle to adapt to the Premiear League’s physicality and intensity despite his goal-scoring success in Portugal.
Speaking on his podcast, Rio Ferdinand Presents, the United legend shared his reservations about Gyokeres’ ability to thrive in England’s top flight. While acknowledging his impressive form, Ferdinand remains unconvinced that Gyokeres can consistently deliver in the Premier League.
“I don’t think he’s the guy,” Ferdinand stated. “I’ve watched him closely, and I just don’t see him getting those opportunities in the Premier League. When I see him physically matched, what else is there? Is there enough—after he’s physically matched—to get him a goal?”
Gyokeres has also been heavily linked with Arsenal, as well as Chelsea, but Manchester United reportedly leads the race for his signature. The striker, who has a €100m (£84m) release clause, was initially expected to be available for €60m (£51m) plus add-ons. However, Sporting Lisbon is now demanding €80m (£67m), a change that has reportedly frustrated the player.
Despite his 97 goals in 102 matches for Sporting, Ferdinand remains skeptical about whether Gyokeres can handle the pace and aggression of English football. His concerns echo those of other analysts who question whether success in Portugal translates well to the Premier League.
With Manchester United in desperate need of a reliable striker, the club must weigh Ferdinand’s concerns against Gyokeres’ undeniable goal-scoring ability. If United proceeds with the signing, Gyokeres will need to prove that he can handle the physicality and tactical demands of English football.
