Rio Ferdinand insists Liverpool remain Premier League favourites, despite Arsenal’s comeback win over Newcastle United narrowing the gap.
Former Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has shared his thoughts on the Premier League title race favourites after a dramatic weekend that saw Arsenal seal a comeback victory and Liverpool suffer their first defeat of the season.
Arsenal showed grit and determination in their 2-1 win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park. The Gunners fell behind to a Nick Woltemade header in the first half but rallied late in the game. Goals from Mikel Merino and Gabriel Magalhães turned the tie around, securing all three points in front of a hostile away crowd.
The victory was vital for Mikel Arteta’s side, who had stumbled in recent weeks. It also cut Liverpool’s lead at the top of the table to just two points after six matches. Ferdinand praised Arsenal’s mental strength, describing their comeback as a “massive shift in mindset and belief.”
Liverpool’s First Setback of the Season
Liverpool, the reigning champions, had been flawless in their opening five matches. Their resilience and habit of scoring late goals made them look unstoppable. However, Crystal Palace delivered a shock result at Selhurst Park with a dramatic 2-1 win.
Federico Chiesa equalised for Liverpool in the 87th minute, but substitute Eddie Nketiah struck in stoppage time to hand Palace all three points. It was a rare setback for Arne Slot’s side.
Despite the defeat, Rio Ferdinand insisted that Liverpool remain the favourites. Speaking on his podcast, he said:
“Liverpool are the team to beat. They are the champions. With their experience, they are still the team everyone will chase this season.”

The early season has already produced twists and turns. With Manchester City and Chelsea currently outside the top four, the battle for the title is shaping into a head-to-head clash between Arsenal and Liverpool.
Bookmakers have tipped Arsenal as slight favourites given their strong form against top opposition. Still, Ferdinand believes Liverpool’s experience and championship mentality make them the team to watch.
As the campaign progresses, consistency will be key. Arsenal must build on their comeback win and take advantage of Liverpool’s slip. But Ferdinand’s message is clear: the road to Premier League glory still runs through Anfield.
