David Raya says Liverpool missed out on Arsenal’s “incredible” signing Martin Zubimendi, praising his intelligence and team play.
Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya has praised new teammate Martin Zubimendi, calling him an “incredible” player. According to Raya, Liverpool missed out on a golden opportunity of signing the Spanish midfielder before his move to Arsenal.
Last summer, Liverpool was reportedly close to signing Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. The Reds were looking to strengthen their midfield, but Zubimendi chose to stay in Spain for another season. That decision opened the door for Arsenal, who signed him in a £60 million deal this July.
Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League match, Raya said:
“He’s incredible. I’ve shared the dressing room with him in the national team, and now at Arsenal, he’s surprised me even more. He’s intelligent, plays for the team, and his positioning is top-class.”
Zubimendi has already made a strong impression. Despite illness during his Premier League debut, he bounced back with a standout performance against Leeds United, scoring twice and earning Player of the Match.
Jamie Carragher Claims Arteta “Stole” Zubimendi
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher added drama to the story. On the Stick to Football podcast, he claimed Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta “definitely stole” Zubimendi from Liverpool. Carragher believes Arteta convinced the midfielder to wait another year before joining Arsenal.

“Arteta’s from the Basque region. He told Zubimendi to hold off and promised a move to Arsenal. That stopped Liverpool’s deal,” Carragher said.
With Zubimendi already proving his worth, Arsenal appears to have made a smart investment. His tactical awareness and versatility have strengthened Arteta’s squad. Meanwhile, Liverpool may be regretting the missed chance to sign him.
