Premier League officials have awarded Arsenal second goal at Leeds to Noni Madueke, ending his league goal drought.
The Premier League has officially credited Noni Madueke goal following a post-match review of Arsenal emphatic 4–0 win over Leeds United at Elland Road.
The league’s Goal Accreditation Panel initially credited Arsenal’s second strike as an own goal by Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow, but later awarded it to Madueke. The decision ended the winger’s 12‑month Premier League goal drought and marked his first league goal since joining the Gunners.
The incident occurred in the 38th minute with Arsenal already leading through Martín Zubimendi’s header. Madueke delivered a dangerous inswinging corner from the left, sending the ball directly toward the near post.
Under pressure, Darlow attempted to punch clear but misjudged the flight, diverting the ball into his own net. Match officials initially ruled it an own goal, despite replays showing Madueke’s delivery was heading on target.
Madueke, speaking to BBC Sport after the match appealed for a review, insisting the corner was deliberate and goal-bound.
Premier League ruling explained
Less than 24 hours later, the Premier League issued confirmation through its Match Centre, stating:
“The Goal Accreditation Panel has adjudged Arsenal’s 38th-minute goal as a Madueke goal.”
The independent panel concluded that Madueke’s delivery was intentional and on target, meeting the criteria required to award the goal to the attacking player rather than the defender or goalkeeper.
Similar rulings have been applied in previous seasons when corners or shots were deemed goal-bound despite goalkeeper contact.
The decision carries added significance for the 23-year-old, who had scored three times in the Champions League this season but was still waiting for his first Premier League goal in Arsenal colours.
The ruling officially ends a year-long league scoring drought and provides a timely confidence boost as Arsenal enter a decisive phase of the season.
Madueke also assisted Zubimendi’s opener and played a key role throughout the match, stepping in after Bukayo Saka was ruled out during the warm-up.
The Leeds victory restored Arsenal’s seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, with further goals coming from Viktor Gyökeres and Gabriel Jesus.
Mikel Arteta’s side responded emphatically after a brief dip in league form, and the amended scoring decision adds another positive note to an already dominant performance.
For Leeds, the episode highlighted continued struggles defending set pieces, an issue that has plagued their season.
Why the decision matters
The ruling offers clarity on how the Premier League adjudicates contested goals, relying on video review, trajectory analysis and intent.
