Premier League clubs agree to implement two separate summer transfer windows in preparation for the FIFA Club World Cup.
Premier League has confirmed that there will be two separate summer transfer windows in 2025. This decision comes as a response to the scheduling challenges posed by the expanded FIFA Club World Cup, set to take place in the United States from June 15 to July 13.
The first transfer window will open from June 1 to June 10, allowing clubs to finalize early deals before the Club World Cup begins. After a brief pause, the second window will commence on June 16 and run until September 1, aligning with the traditional European transfer window schedule.
This arrangement is particularly significant for Premier League representatives Chelsea and Manchester City, who will participate in the 32-team Club World Cup. The early window provides these clubs with an opportunity to strengthen their squads ahead of the tournament. FIFA has also approved an additional registration period during the tournament, enabling clubs to sign players for the knockout stages.
The decision to split the transfer window was made to comply with FIFA’s 16-week limit on transfer periods while ensuring alignment with other European leagues. This innovative approach aims to balance the needs of clubs participating in the Club World Cup with those of other Premier League teams.
While the move has been welcomed by some, it also raises questions about its impact on player contracts and transfer negotiations. For instance, players with contracts expiring on June 30 may face unique challenges in resolving their futures during this period.
