Arsenal legend Per Mertesacker confirms decision to step down as academy manager at the end of the season.
Per Mertesacker has confirmed he will step down as Arsenal academy manager at the end of the current season, bringing an eight-year chapter of youth development leadership to a close.
The former Arsenal captain, who has overseen the club’s academy since 2018, will depart in May after playing a central role in reshaping Hale End into one of the Premier League’s most productive youth systems.
Mertesacker joined Arsenal as a player in 2011 from Werder Bremen and quickly became a leader at the heart of the defence. Across seven seasons, he made 221 appearances and helped deliver three FA Cup titles in 2014, 2015 and 2017.
After retiring in 2018, the German transitioned directly into the academy manager role, tasked with protecting Arsenal’s long-term identity while modernising youth development. His move proved pivotal.
Hale End Success Under Mertesacker
During his tenure, Arsenal’s academy embraced Mertesacker’s guiding philosophy: “better people make better players.” The approach prioritised character, resilience and tactical intelligence alongside technical development.
That vision has delivered tangible results. Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman have all progressed from Hale End into Mikel Arteta’s first-team environment, reinforcing Arsenal’s renewed commitment to homegrown talent.
The improved pathway between academy and senior football has become a cornerstone of Arsenal’s squad planning during their Premier League title push.
Confirming his departure, Mertesacker admitted the decision was emotional but necessary.
“Arsenal is and will always be a very special club to me,” he said.
“I’m extremely thankful for the trust the club placed in me when I moved straight from playing into this role. Now it feels like the right time to explore something new and push myself further.”
He compared the feeling to stepping away from international football after Germany’s 2014 World Cup win — a moment of completion rather than fatigue.
Arsenal Pay Tribute to Lasting Impact
Arsenal CEO Richard Garlick praised Mertesacker’s influence, describing his leadership as fundamental to the club’s long-term strategy.
Garlick highlighted Mertesacker’s deep understanding of Arsenal values and confirmed plans are already in place to ensure continuity within the academy structure.
The club remains committed to heavy academy investment as part of its ambition to compete consistently at the highest level.
