Paul Merson warns Arsenal ahead of Champions League draws highlights Real Madrid threat and suggests Atletico Madrid as safer quarter-final opponent.
Paul Merson warns Arsenal to steer clear of Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals. The former Gunners midfielder believes the reigning European champions pose the biggest threat to Mikel Arteta’s side.
Arsenal all but secured their spot in the last eight after thrashing PSV Eindhoven 7–1 in the first leg of their Round of 16 clash. Merson’s warning, published in his Sky Sports column, sparked debate among fans and pundits.
Merson pointed to Real Madrid’s unmatched pedigree in the competition. With 15 Champions League titles and a squad stacked with elite talent—including Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior, and Kylian Mbappé—he believes they could overpower Arsenal across two legs.

“Real Madrid have the experience, the firepower, and the mentality to punish any mistake,” Merson wrote.
Merson also suggested that Arsenal would fare better against Atletico Madrid. He explained that Atletico’s defensive style suits Arsenal’s strengths and presents a more manageable challenge. Unlike Real Madrid, Atletico rarely overwhelm teams with attacking flair.
Arteta continues to prepare his squad for the next round, but Merson’s insight adds a strategic layer to the conversation. As the draw approaches, Arsenal fans will watch closely to see whether their club avoids the Spanish giants
