Paul Merson says Arsenal will win the Premier League “quite easily” after dismantling Aston Villa at the Emirates.

Paul Merson has made one of his boldest Premier League predictions yet, insisting Arsenal will win the title “quite easily” after their emphatic 4-1 demolition of Aston Villa.

The former Arsenal midfielder delivered his verdict following Mikel Arteta’s side producing a devastating second-half display at the Emirates Stadium, a result that lifted the Gunners five points clear at the top of the table and sent a clear warning to Manchester City and the rest of the chasing pack.

The first half offered little indication of what was to come. Both sides traded chances, with Viktor Gyokeres heading over for Arsenal and Ollie Watkins going close twice for Villa, including a tight offside call that ruled out a potential opener.

Just two minutes into the second half, Gabriel Magalhaes powered home a header from a Bukayo Saka corner to give Arsenal the lead. Moments later, Martin Ødegaard pressed high, won possession, and slipped the ball through for Martin Zubimendi, who calmly doubled the advantage.

From there, Arsenal took complete control.

Leandro Trossard punished defensive hesitation to make it 3-0 before Gabriel Jesus curled home a fourth following a slick team move. Watkins pulled one back late on, but the contest had long been settled.

The result ended Aston Villa’s 11-match winning run in all competitions and marked Arsenal’s fourth consecutive league victory.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the match, Paul Merson described Arsenal’s performance as a defining moment in the title race.

“That was an outstanding 30 minutes from Arsenal in the second half. They suffocated Aston Villa and made them look pretty average in the end.”

Merson highlighted the significance of the result, noting that Villa had entered the game as arguably the most in-form team in the country.

“They’ve just dismantled the most in-form team in England, if not Europe. That’s a statement.”

He then delivered his headline-grabbing prediction.

“They’ve got a five-point lead, their goal difference is strong, and they’ve already played a lot of tough away games.

Looking at Arsenal now, I genuinely don’t know who will stop them. I think they win the Premier League quite easily.”

Merson also pointed to Arsenal’s upcoming schedule as a key reason for his confidence.

The Gunners will face most of their remaining top-six rivals at home, with Manchester City the notable exception. With momentum building and attacking fluency returning, Merson suggested City would have watched the Villa result with concern.

“Manchester City will have seen that and thought, ‘wow’. That’s a proper statement result.”

Arteta Keeps Feet on the Ground

While pundits talked up Arsenal’s title credentials, Mikel Arteta struck a more measured tone.

The Arsenal boss admitted the opening phase of the second half proved decisive but stressed the need for consistency heading into 2026.

“The way we started the second half was amazing. We raised the intensity and were ruthless.”

Reflecting on the bigger picture, Arteta added:

“We know what we want. We will have to work extremely hard every single day, but we are on the right track.”

Mixed Reaction to Merson’s Claim

Merson’s prediction has split opinion among fans and pundits alike.

Some Arsenal supporters echoed his confidence, pointing to the team’s dominance against elite opposition. Others urged caution, noting Manchester City’s history of late-season surges and the long road still ahead.

Merson himself has built a reputation for fearless predictions — not all of which have aged well — but this latest call has undeniably raised the stakes.

As the calendar year closes, Arsenal finish top of the Premier League once again, reinforcing the sense that Arteta’s project has reached a new level of maturity.

Whether Paul Merson’s bold claim proves prophetic remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that Arsenal’s demolition of Aston Villa has shifted the tone of the title race — and the pressure now rests firmly on their rivals.
