Paul Merson believed Arsenal have no chance of catching Liverpool this season after their loss to West Ham at the Emirates, citing a lack of fit forwards as the primary reason.
Arsenal’s hopes of clinching the Premier League title took a significant blow after their unexpected 1-0 defeat to West Ham United. This result has led former Arsenal player and football pundit Paul Merson to assert that Liverpool are now certain to win the Premier League title.
Speaking on Sky Sports News, Merson did not mince his words when discussing Arsenal’s chances of catching up with Liverpool. “One million per cent, there’s no way Arsenal can catch Liverpool,” he declared emphatically. Merson’s bold statement came after Arsenal’s lackluster performance against West Ham, where they struggled to create meaningful chances and ultimately succumbed to Jarrod Bowen’s first-half header.
Merson highlighted Arsenal’s injury woes as a critical factor in their defeat. With key players like Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, and Bukayo Saka sidelined, Arsenal’s attacking options were severely limited. Mikel Merino, who was deployed as a makeshift center-forward, failed to replicate his previous heroics, leaving Arsenal toothless in attack.
The defeat means that Liverpool now have the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table. If they secure a victory against Manchester City, they will go 11 points clear of Arsenal, albeit having played one game more. Merson’s confidence in Liverpool’s title chances is unwavering, even suggesting that a heavy defeat for Liverpool against Manchester City would not be enough to reignite Arsenal’s hopes.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was visibly frustrated after the match, acknowledging that his team did not meet the required standards to compete for the Premier League title. “It was nowhere near the level that we need to win the Premier League,” Arteta admitted in his post-match interview. Despite dominating possession and registering 20 shots, Arsenal failed to break down West Ham’s resolute defense, further compounding their title challenge.
As the Premier League season progresses, Liverpool’s consistency and depth in squad strength have positioned them as the clear favorites to lift the trophy. With Arsenal’s title hopes dwindling, it appears that Paul Merson’s prediction may well come to fruition, leaving Liverpool fans eagerly anticipating their first Premier League title since the 2019/20 season.
