Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira questions the mentality of Mikel Arteta’s side after naming two players who fell short against Manchester United.
Arsenal icon Patrick Vieira has delivered a blunt assessment of the Gunners following their dramatic 3–2 home defeat to Manchester United, calling into question the team’s mentality and singling out two attackers for underperforming.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Vieira argued that the manner of the defeat mattered more than the result itself, with the focus keyphrase Patrick Vieira Arsenal criticism capturing the growing debate around Arsenal’s title credentials. The loss narrowed Arsenal’s lead at the top of the Premier League to four points and intensified pressure in the title race.
Vieira, who captained Arsenal’s legendary Invincibles side, did not hold back in his analysis.
“They’re still four points clear, but there are still questions about the mental strength of the team,” Vieira said. “It’s not just that they lost the game — it’s the way they lost the game.”
He pointed to a lack of energy, freedom, and risk-taking after Arsenal conceded momentum, despite controlling large parts of the first half. Vieira stressed that title-winning sides must impose themselves even after setbacks.
Vieira Names Saka and Trossard as Key Issues
The former Arsenal captain specifically criticised Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard, claiming neither winger caused enough problems for Manchester United’s defence.
“Saka and Trossard didn’t produce enough to worry United,” Vieira said, describing both players as “too quiet.”
Saka, usually Arsenal’s most decisive attacker, has endured a dip in form, registering no goals and one assist in his last five matches. Vieira insisted that big players must deliver in big games if Arsenal want to win the league.
While critical, Vieira acknowledged positive contributions from others. He praised Gabriel Jesus for his work rate and Declan Rice for his dominance in one-on-one duels. However, he warned that too many players operated below their usual standards.
“They need a leader to lift the spirit of the team,” Vieira added, hinting at a lack of on-pitch authority during key moments.
Worrying Trend Against Top-Six Rivals
The defeat also highlighted a concerning trend. Arsenal have now taken just nine points from seven matches against top-six opponents this season. By comparison, they went unbeaten in ten such fixtures last campaign.
Manchester City and Aston Villa have closed the gap, leaving little margin for error as Arsenal approach decisive fixtures in both the Premier League and Champions League.
