Patrice Evra backs Arsenal to win the Premier League but warns the Gunners must avoid “bottling” the title again during the run-in.
Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra believes Arsenal can finally win the Premier League title this season, but he has warned Mikel Arteta’s side must avoid repeating past collapses during the decisive weeks of the campaign.
In an exclusive interview with Stake, Evra delivered his familiar blend of encouragement and teasing while discussing the Gunners’ ongoing title race.
Arsenal strengthened their grip at the top of the table on Wednesday night after Bukayo Saka’s early goal secured a 1-0 victory over Brighton. The result pushed the north London club seven points clear, although Manchester City still have a game in hand.
Evra admitted he genuinely wants Arsenal to end their long wait for a league title.
However, the former United star could not resist referencing the joke that has followed the Gunners in recent seasons.
“I want Arsenal to win the league, I just hope they don’t bottle it again,” Evra said.
“People like the joke I made about calling them Netflix – we always have to wait for next season.”
The Frenchman added that while he hopes Arsenal succeed, he would not be shocked if pressure affects them again.
“Come on Arsenal, you can do it this year, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they bottle it again.”
Title Race Context After Brighton Win
Arsenal’s narrow victory at the Amex Stadium proved crucial in the context of the title race.
Arteta’s side now sit on 67 points after 30 matches, while Manchester City remain seven points behind with one game in hand.
The two teams will meet at the Etihad Stadium in April in what could become the defining match of the season.
Evra acknowledged that grinding out victories like the Brighton result is often the hallmark of champions.
“Man City’s draw with Nottingham Forest is a big boost,” he said. “Even if Brighton had chances, Arsenal won. That’s a sign of a Premier League winner.”
Evra also suggested Arsenal must abandon any obsession with attractive football if they want to secure the title.
In his view, results should come before style during the final stretch of the campaign.
“Arsenal used to play the best football and didn’t win anything,” he explained.
“I don’t care if they don’t play good football, waste time, or win through set pieces. They need to win the Premier League at any cost.”
The former defender added that Arteta’s responsibility is simple.
“Mikel Arteta is not here to please people. He’s here to win.”
Pressure of Past Near Misses
Arsenal’s recent history adds extra tension to this year’s race.
The Gunners finished second in each of the last three seasons, including a painful campaign in which they surrendered a late lead and lost the title on the final day.
Those scars remain fresh among supporters and pundits alike.
Evra, however, ended his comments on a hopeful note.
