Ethan Nwaneri earned widespread recognition for his exceptional man-of-the-match performance in Arsenal’s 2-1 Champions League triumph over Girona.
Owen Hargreaves praised Ethan Nwaneri as a “special” player following Arsenal’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Girona in the Champions League on January 29, 2025. Nwaneri, who scored the decisive goal with a superb finish from outside the box, has been making waves with his performances this season.
The match saw Arsenal come from behind to secure their place in the round of 16. After Arnaut Danjuma put Girona ahead early in the first half, Arsenal equalized from the penalty spot through Jorginho before Nwaneri’s goal completed the comeback.
Hargreaves, speaking on TNT Sports, highlighted Nwaneri’s exceptional talent: “The remarkable thing about him is the ball sticks to his foot – it’s never away from him. I don’t want to say who he reminds me of because it puts pressure on him, but he’s a special player.”

Nwaneri’s goal was his sixth in all competitions this season, and he became the second youngest Englishman to score a Champions League goal, after Jude Bellingham. His composed and confident display has earned him rave reviews from pundits and fans.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta also commended Nwaneri’s temperament and ability: “He never does (look nervous). He’s so composed, so calm, so confident about his ability and when you can start in the Champions League at 17 and score a very important goal, it’s not very common.”
The victory not only secured Arsenal’s spot in the knockout stages but also showcased the team’s consistency and quality. With a quick turnaround before their next Premier League clash against Manchester City, the Gunners will be looking to carry this momentum forward.
