Merino’s PSG Warning: Arsenal’s Determined to Overcome the Deficit and Keep the Champions League Dream Alive
Merino’s PSG warning has been dropped as Arsenal prepares for the decisive Champions League second leg. The Gunners midfielder has issued a rallying cry ahead of the club’s crucial Champions League second leg against Paris Saint-Germain. After suffering a 1-0 defeat at the Emirates in the first leg, Merino remains confident that his team can overturn the deficit and secure a place in the final.
The Gunners face an uphill battle as they travel to the Parc des Princes, needing a victory to keep their Champions League dreams alive. PSG, widely regarded as one of the tournament favorites, took the lead in the first leg through Ousmane Dembélé’s early goal and managed to hold onto their advantage.
Despite the setback, Merino believes Arsenal’s recent triumph at the Bernabéu, where they eliminated defending champions Real Madrid, proves they have the resilience and quality to overcome PSG.
Speaking after the first-leg defeat, Merino emphasized the team’s ability to compete against Europe’s elite.
“Those experiences are massive for us to prove we can win anywhere—the Bernabéu, against any side in the Premier League as well. It gives us a lot of confidence,” Merino stated.
He acknowledged the difficulty of playing in Paris but remained optimistic about Arsenal’s chances.
“Paris is a tough place to go, but we have proved that we can compete against anybody. With all due respect to PSG, I think we are going to win the second leg,” he added
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will need to make key tactical adjustments to ensure his side can break down PSG’s defense. The first leg saw Arsenal create several chances, but they struggled to convert them into goals.
Ex-Arsenal striker Ian Wright expressed surprise at the team’s cautious approach in the opening stages of the match. However, Merino believes Arsenal showed enough attacking intent to give themselves confidence heading into the second leg.
“I think today we saw a team that can compete against anybody. We had massive chances to level the game, but we couldn’t. The team is full of confidence and energy for the second leg,” Merino explained.
Arsenal has not reached a Champions League final since 2006, and this match presents a golden opportunity to rewrite history. With PSG standing in their way, the Gunners must deliver a performance of the highest caliber to keep their European hopes alive.
