Arsenal’s new signing, Mikel Merino, revealed that his international teammate, David Raya, frequently asked him about joining Arsenal. Raya, who became Arsenal’s first summer signing after a successful loan from Brentford, was eager to see Merino join him in North London.

Raya was followed by Riccardo Calafiori, who joined from Bologna for £42 million. Merino became the third signing after his move from Real Sociedad, valued at up to £32 million with add-ons was finalized.

Merino, who previously played for Newcastle United, will wear the number 23 jersey at Arsenal, the same number he wore at St James’ Park. After leaving Newcastle in 2018, he spent six years at Real Sociedad.

All of Merino’s senior Spain caps came after his return to the Basque Country, including a crucial goal against Germany at Euro 2024. He often spoke with Raya during the tournament and shared insights into their conversations.

“When the rumors started, Raya was always asking me, ‘What’s going on? Am I going to see you next year with us?!’,” Merino told the club’s media.

Merino expressed his happiness about reuniting with Raya, highlighting their strong relationship and shared success at the Euros. He believes Raya will help him adapt to his new life at Arsenal.

Merino also reminisced about playing with Martin Odegaard at Real Sociedad during the 2019-20 season, expressing his excitement about rekindling their on-field connection at Arsenal.
