Mikel Merino scored a match-winning brace in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Leicester. He dedicated the goals to his wife, to whom he had forgotten to buy a Valentine’s Day gift.

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino turned a potential Valentine’s Day blunder into a memorable moment of love and celebration. During Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Leicester City on February 15, 2025, Merino netted a brace that not only secured the win but also served as a heartfelt apology to his wife, Lola Liberal, for forgetting to buy her a gift for Valentine’s Day.

Merino, who was brought on as an emergency striker in the 69th minute, scored his first goal by heading in Ethan Nwaneri’s cross from close range. He sealed the victory with a second goal, finding space at the far post to steer home Leandro Trossard’s cross. In his post-match interview, Merino humorously admitted his oversight and dedicated his goals to his wife, saying, “I think she would appreciate this more than a rose or some chocolates”.

Lola Liberal, a Spanish model and influencer, took to Instagram to express her gratitude and support, captioning a photo of Merino celebrating with “Best gift ever!!!” followed by a laughing emoji and two hearts. The couple, who married in January 2024, have been seen traveling the world together and supporting each other in their respective careers.
