Liverpool’s dominance leaves Arsenal with another close call as Mikel Arteta reflects on Arsenal’s title struggles and setbacks that defined the season.
Mikel Arteta has opened up about the key factors that led to Arsenal title struggles, falling short in the Premier League title race once again. Despite a strong campaign, the Gunners were unable to keep pace with Liverpool, who secured the championship under new manager Arne Slot.
For the third consecutive season, Arsenal found themselves in the thick of the title race, only to finish second once more. While the North London club had high hopes of overtaking Liverpool in the latter half of the season, they ultimately fell 15 points behind the champions with two games remaining.
Reflecting on the season, Arteta admitted that he had envisioned lifting the trophy at Arsenal’s final home game. However, reality played out differently, leaving the club with another near-miss in their pursuit of Premier League glory.
Arteta pinpointed red cards and injuries as the two main reasons Arsenal failed to keep pace with Liverpool. The Gunners endured a frustrating season in terms of discipline, receiving six red cards—the most in the league. Additionally, injuries plagued the squad, with key players such as Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel missing significant portions of the campaign.
The Arsenal boss believes that without these setbacks, his team would have been much closer to Liverpool in the standings. “Red cards and injuries, for sure. But without that, we don’t know what would have happened. Would we have been much closer? For me, the answer is without a question, yes,” Arteta stated.
Despite the disappointment, Arteta remains optimistic about Arsenal’s future. He acknowledged that the bar will be raised even higher next season and emphasized the need for improvement. The club is expected to be active in the summer transfer window, with Arteta reportedly keen on signing a new striker, central midfielder, and winger to strengthen the squad.
As Arsenal prepares for another campaign, the challenge remains the same: overcoming setbacks and finally breaking their title drought. With Arteta at the helm, the Gunners will hope that next season brings fewer injuries, better discipline, and ultimately, a Premier League trophy.
