Mikel Arteta backs William Saliba to reach new levels as Arsenal £27m defender continues to anchor their Premier League title push.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has made an exciting prediction about William Saliba, insisting the defender is yet to reach his peak levels despite already establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs.
Arteta praised Saliba’s consistency and maturity but stressed that there is still significant room for growth.
“He will reach new levels,” Arteta said, underlining his belief that the 24-year-old has more to offer.
From £27m Signing to Arsenal Defensive Leader
Saliba joined Arsenal from Saint-Étienne in 2019 for £27 million, a deal that initially raised eyebrows given his age and limited top-level experience. Strategic loan spells at Saint-Étienne, Nice, and Marseille followed, allowing the defender to develop physically and tactically.
Since making his full Arsenal debut in the 2022–23 season, Saliba has become a cornerstone of Arteta’s defence. His partnership with Gabriel Magalhães has provided Arsenal with balance, composure, and defensive authority at the back.
This season, Saliba has featured in every Premier League match for Arsenal, playing a vital role in one of the league’s strongest defensive records. His calmness in possession, aerial dominance, and exceptional reading of the game have helped keep Arsenal firmly in the title race.
Arteta believes Saliba’s consistency sets him apart but insists his ceiling remains higher.
“He’s still a long way from realising his full potential,” the Arsenal boss added, reinforcing the long-term vision for the defender.
Saliba has previously credited Arteta’s detailed coaching for his rapid improvement, highlighting the manager’s emphasis on positioning, decision-making, and leadership.
Arteta’s faith reflects his broader impact since arriving in north London in 2019, transforming Arsenal from mid-table uncertainty into genuine contenders across domestic and European competitions. Saliba’s development mirrors the club’s wider resurgence.
