Mikel Arteta hails Max Dowman fearless instinct after his historic Champions League debut for Arsenal, calling it a gift you simply can’t teach.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has lavished praise on teenage prodigy Max Dowman, describing his fearless approach as “one thing you can’t teach.” 15-year-old  Max Dowman made history by becoming the youngest player ever to appear in the UEFA Champions League, coming off the bench during Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Slavia Prague.

On a memorable night in Prague, Dowman stepped onto the European stage at just 15 years and 308 days old, breaking the long-standing record held by Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko, who debuted at 16 years and 18 days. Arsenal’s goals came courtesy of Bukayo Saka and a brace from Mikel Merino, but Dowman’s late cameo stole the headlines.

Arteta praised Dowman’s instinctive style, highlighting his courage and natural confidence.

The first ball he gets, he takes people on. He starts to dribble and gets a foul,” Arteta said. “That’s something you can’t teach. That’s instinct, courage, and belief in your own ability.”

Maturity Beyond His Years

Despite his youth, Dowman has already made two Premier League appearances and featured twice in the Carabao Cup this season. His rapid rise from the Hale End academy has amazed Arsenal’s coaching staff, who regard him as one of the most promising talents of his generation.

Arteta emphasised that Dowman’s maturity and intelligence on the pitch are far beyond his years.

He’s not just talented—he’s brave. That’s what sets him apart,” Arteta added.

Arsenal’s Youth Revolution

Dowman wasn’t the only teenager making headlines. Andre Harriman-Annous, 17, also made his Champions League debut, replacing Declan Rice late in the game. Their appearances reflect Arteta’s continued commitment to giving young players meaningful minutes at the top level.

With Arsenal already qualified for the Champions League knockout stages, fans can expect to see more of Dowman and his fellow academy graduates in upcoming fixtures.

While Arteta is keen to manage expectations, it’s clear that Dowman represents the next generation of Arsenal’s future. His combination of technical skill, confidence, and raw instinct makes him one of the most exciting young players in Europe.

As Arsenal continues to chase glory on multiple fronts, the football world will be watching Dowman’s rise closely. The fearless 15-year-old has already made history—and this is likely only the beginning.
