Mikel Arteta provides injury update on Declan Rice fitness after Arsenal 2-1 Chelsea win at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal strengthened their grip on the Premier League title race with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium, but fresh injury concern over Declan Rice clouded the win after the midfielder limped off late in the contest.

William Saliba and Jurriën Timber scored from corners to restore Arsenal’s five-point lead at the top of the table. Yet attention quickly shifted from the result to Rice’s condition, after the England international signalled to the bench and requested a substitution in the 76th minute.

Rice had just completed a vital recovery run to stop a Chelsea counter-attack before he appeared to strain a muscle while playing a back pass to David Raya. He left the pitch in visible discomfort, and Christian Nørgaard replaced him, raising immediate concerns inside the Emirates.

Speaking to the Media immediately after the final whistle, Mikel Arteta offered a guarded assessment of the situation.

Declan asked to be substituted so he is going to have to get checked and see if he is available for Wednesday, unfortunately, the Arsenal manager said.

Arteta confirmed the squad would be medically assessed in the coming days, but made clear that Rice’s fitness is now a priority concern. For the first time since December 3, the 27-year-old started a Premier League match and failed to complete the full 90 minutes — underlining the significance of the setback.

Set-Piece Precision Decides London Derby

Once again, Arsenal’s dead-ball structure proved decisive.

Saliba opened the scoring with a powerful header from a Bukayo Saka corner midway through the first half. Chelsea equalised in stoppage time when Piero Hincapié turned a Reece James delivery into his own net, leaving the game finely balanced at the break.

The second half swung Arsenal’s way when Pedro Neto, already booked, received a second yellow card for a cynical foul on Gabriel Martinelli, reducing Chelsea to ten men.

Arsenal capitalised through their most reliable weapon. Rice delivered a perfectly weighted corner from the left, and Timber ghosted into space to nod home the winner — Arsenal’s 16th set-piece goal of the league season, underlining the tactical evolution of Arteta’s side.

Despite the man advantage, Arsenal were forced to defend late pressure. Raya produced a crucial stoppage-time intervention, tipping away a dangerous Alejandro Garnacho delivery that was drifting towards the far corner.

Arteta praised his goalkeeper’s influence after the match:
“David is one of our leaders… that save in the last action, my heart almost stopped, but David’s hand was there.”

The win extends Arsenal’s unbeaten run against Chelsea to 11 matches and moves them five points clear of Manchester City at the summit of the Premier League.

However, momentum now comes with medical anxiety. Arsenal face a rapid turnaround with a midweek trip to Brighton, and Rice’s potential absence would force further midfield rotation in a squad already managing fitness concerns.

Arteta also confirmed that Martin Ødegaard did not play because of a knee issue:
Unfortunately Martin is still not feeling totally comfortable with that knee injury.”

What Next for Declan Rice?

No official diagnosis exists yet, but early indications suggest a muscular issue rather than a long-term injury. Arsenal’s medical staff will carry out scans and assessments over the next 48 hours.

Any absence would be a significant blow. Rice has been the structural core of Arsenal’s midfield this season — tactically, physically and mentally — and his influence in big games has been central to their title push.

As the title race enters its decisive phase, Arsenal have shown resilience, control and tactical maturity. But losing their most consistent performer, even temporarily, would test Arteta’s depth and rotation management at a critical moment in the season.
