Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta explains his double substitution with half an hour remaining after Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard were withdrawn at 0-0 against Everton
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta addresses the substitutions of Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice during the goalless draw against Everton on December 14, 2024.
Arteta explained that Declan Rice was substituted due to a minor injury concern. Rice had been experiencing a niggle for the past week and requested to be taken off to avoid aggravating the issue. Arteta stated, “He’s been with a little niggle for the last week or so, and he asked to be taken off.”
On the other hand, the decision to substitute Martin Odegaard was purely tactical. Arteta aimed to change the team’s rhythm and inject fresh energy into the midfield. He introduced Jorginho and Ethan Nwaneri in place of Odegaard and Rice, hoping to alter the dynamics and create more attacking opportunities.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Arsenal failed to break the deadlock against a resilient Everton side. Arteta expressed his disappointment, saying, “It’s very disappointing not to win the game. We fully deserved to win the game. We conceded no shots, and we dominated play.”
The draw keeps Arsenal in third place in the Premier League standings, with 30 points from 16 games. The Gunners will look to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures, starting with the EFL Cup quarter-final against Crystal Palace at home on December 18, followed by a league match against Crystal Palace three days later.
