Arsenal Legend Perry Groves questions Arsenal January Transfer Call for Ethan Nwaneri Loan.

Mikel Arteta has come under criticism from former Arsenal winger Perry Groves after allowing young star Ethan Nwaneri to leave on loan during the January transfer window.

The highly rated teenager joined Marseille for the remainder of the season in search of more regular first-team football.

However, Groves believes the decision was risky given Arsenal’s demanding schedule and their involvement in multiple competitions.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the Arsenal legend said he felt surprised that the club allowed such a promising talent to leave.

I couldn’t believe they let Ethan Nwaneri go,” Groves said. “You can never have too many players in your squad, especially during a busy season.”

He suggested that even if the youngster was not playing regularly, Arsenal would have benefited from having additional depth available.

Nwaneri’s Breakthrough and Reduced Role This Season

Nwaneri made headlines earlier in his career by becoming the youngest player to appear in the Premier League when he debuted at just 15 years old.

The attacking midfielder continued to develop rapidly and featured regularly last season, making 37 appearances across all competitions and earning a new long-term contract with the club.

However, opportunities became limited during the current campaign.

The 18-year-old managed only 12 substitute appearances and did not start a single Premier League match, with competition for places increasing in Arsenal’s attacking midfield positions.

Players such as Martin Ødegaard, Eberechi Eze and summer signing Noni Madueke have all been ahead of him in Arteta’s selection plans.

Arteta Defends Arsenal Decision to Loan Ethan Nwaneri

Arteta previously explained that the loan decision was made with Nwaneri’s development in mind.

The Arsenal manager believes young players need consistent minutes in order to reach their potential.

“Talented players need game time,” Arteta said earlier in the season. “In Ethan’s case he wasn’t getting enough minutes here.”

The Spaniard also pointed to Marseille as a suitable environment for the teenager, particularly under the management of Roberto De Zerbi, who has a reputation for developing young talent.

Connections with former Arsenal defender William Saliba also helped make the move appealing.

Mixed Start to Life at Marseille

Nwaneri made an immediate impact in France by scoring on his debut during a 3-1 victory over Lens.

His energetic performances initially impressed supporters and coaching staff.

However, his progress has slowed in recent weeks following managerial changes and fluctuating playing time within the squad.

Despite the challenges, the loan spell is still viewed by some as an important learning experience for the young midfielder.

Groves Warns Arsenal About Squad Depth

Groves believes Arsenal could regret letting Nwaneri leave, especially given the club’s ambitions this season.

The Gunners are currently leading the Premier League table with 67 points from 30 matches and remain active in the Champions League and domestic cup competitions.

According to Groves, maintaining depth across the squad is essential during such a demanding schedule.

“You have to be ruthless in football,” he said. “At the end of the season there will be players who move on anyway.”

He suggested that keeping young players like Nwaneri around the squad could have provided valuable backup if injuries or fatigue became a problem.

Debate Continues Among Arsenal Fans

The decision has divided opinion among Arsenal supporters.

Many fans trust Arteta’s long-term approach to player development, pointing to the successful rise of academy talents such as Bukayo Saka.

Others agree with Groves, arguing that sending a talented youngster away during a season in which Arsenal are chasing multiple trophies may prove risky.

Nwaneri will return to the Emirates Stadium once his loan spell ends, and the club still holds the option to recall him earlier if necessary.

For now, the debate surrounding Arteta’s January decision continues as Arsenal focus on the crucial final stretch of the season.
