Mikel Arteta backs Viktor Gyokeres to shine at Arsenal despite slow start
ArsenalArsenal manager Mikel Arteta has thrown his full support behind Viktor Gyokeres, and has backs the striker despite his slow start in North London. The Swedish international joined Arsenal from Sporting CP in a £63.4 million deal this summer and has scored three goals in his first eight appearances.
Although Gyokeres hasn’t lit up the Premier League with early stats, Arteta firmly believes he possesses the talent and mentality to thrive at the Emirates.
A Challenging Premier League Introduction
Kai Havertz’s knee injury opened the door for Gyokeres to take on a crucial role for the Gunners. He now leads the line against tough Premier League defenses—a demanding task. After the Newcastle United match, Arteta praised Gyokeres for showing strong character and unwavering commitment.
“I loved it,” Arteta said. “Not a single moment of frustration. He handled the physical challenge and created dangerous moments. It’s a pity he didn’t score because he deserved it.”
The Arsenal boss also highlighted Gyokeres’ mental resilience and his quick adaptation to the team environment. Despite limited time in preseason, the striker has already built strong connections with his teammates on and off the pitch.
“He’s so willing and confident. I’ve seen him build connections off the pitch, which is crucial. He’s in a really good place,” Arteta explained.
Tactical Adjustments to Support Gyokeres
Following criticism of Arsenal’s cautious approach in the recent 1–1 draw with Manchester City, Arteta defended his tactics and stressed that the whole team must contribute to creating chances for Gyokeres.
“We have a big responsibility to help him and understand him better. His limited involvement was due to poor build-up play behind him,” the manager said.
With Havertz still sidelined, Gyokeres is expected to continue leading Arsenal’s attack. Arteta remains confident that once the team adapts to his style, the Swedish striker will deliver more goals.
