Former Man City Star Micah Richards Names Arsenal as Favourites to win the Champions League.

Micah Richards believes Arsenal have what it takes to win the UEFA Champions League this season.

The former Manchester City defender and Sky Sports pundit has tipped Mikel Arteta’s side as his favourites for the competition, arguing that the style of football played in Europe could suit the Gunners better than the demands of the Premier League.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast alongside Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, Richards explained why he sees Arsenal as serious contenders for Europe’s biggest prize.

“I think Arsenal are favourites for the Champions League,” Richards said. “The competition might suit them more than the domestic games.”

Richards believes Arsenal’s attacking style could become even more effective in Champions League matches.

According to him, Premier League opponents often set up with defensive low blocks against the Gunners, making it difficult for Arteta’s team to break teams down.

“In the Champions League the games tend to be more open,” Richards explained. “In the Premier League, teams are often sitting deep against Arsenal, which makes it harder for them.”

More space on the pitch could allow Arsenal’s attacking players to thrive and create more opportunities in European competition.

This, Richards believes, gives them a strong advantage as the tournament moves into the knockout stages.

Arsenal’s performances this season have strengthened the belief that they can compete for multiple trophies.

The Gunners currently sit at the top of the Premier League table with 67 points from 30 matches. Their record of 20 wins, seven draws and only three defeats highlights their consistency throughout the campaign.

Arteta’s side have also been impressive defensively, conceding just 22 goals while scoring 59.

In the Champions League, Arsenal finished top of the expanded league phase, confirming their place among Europe’s elite teams.

Their reward is a round-of-16 clash against Bayer Leverkusen, with the first leg set to take place in Germany before the return match at the Emirates Stadium.

Pundits Increasingly Backing Arsenal

Richards’ prediction is not the first time he has backed Arsenal in the competition.

Earlier in the season, both Richards and Alan Shearer admitted they had changed their opinions after observing the form of other European giants.

Several traditional contenders have struggled for consistency this season, which has strengthened Arsenal’s chances.

Richards has also praised the Gunners’ defensive structure, suggesting it could become a decisive factor in knockout matches where small details often determine the outcome.

Former England midfielder Joe Cole has also backed Arsenal to go deep in the tournament.

Speaking on The Dressing Room podcast, Cole predicted that Arsenal could reach the Champions League final in Budapest and even suggested a potential all-English showdown against Manchester City.

He encouraged fans to start preparing for a memorable European run.

With six Premier League clubs reaching the knockout stages — Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham and Newcastle — English football has a strong presence in this season’s competition.

Arsenal have come close to winning the Champions League in the past but have never lifted the trophy.

Their best moment came in 2006 when Arsène Wenger’s team reached the final before losing to Barcelona.

However, the current squad under Arteta appears stronger and more mature. After reaching the semi-finals last season, expectations have grown that the club could take the final step this year.

With key players performing at their peak and confidence high across the squad, many supporters believe this could finally be Arsenal’s moment.

All Eyes on the Knockout Stage

As the Champions League knockout rounds begin, Arsenal will be aiming to prove Richards’ prediction correct.

The upcoming clash with Bayer Leverkusen represents the next major test in their European journey.

If the Gunners can maintain their form and take advantage of the more open style of play in Europe, they may have a genuine chance to secure the first Champions League title in the club’s history.

For Arsenal fans dreaming of European glory, the road to the final has never looked more promising.
