Arsenal opened their Champions League campaign today with a goalless draw against Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium. Despite a solid defensive performance, the Gunners were unable to break down a resilient Atalanta side, with goalkeeper David Raya emerging as the hero of the night.
The match began with Arsenal showing early promise. Bukayo Saka’s free-kick in the opening 20 minutes forced a save from Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi, and Gabriel Martinelli had a half-chance that went over the bar. However, both teams struggled to maintain possession, leading to a lack of clear-cut opportunities. The first half ended with few notable incidents, as both sides found it difficult to create meaningful chances.
The second half started dramatically when Atalanta was awarded a penalty after Thomas Partey fouled Ederson in the box. Mateo Retegui stepped up to take the spot-kick, but David Raya produced a stunning double save to keep the scores level. Raya first saved Retegui’s low effort and then showed incredible reflexes to deny the follow-up header.

Atalanta continued to press, with Juan Cuadrado coming close with a long-range effort. Arsenal’s best chance of the second half fell to Martinelli, who, after being set up by Raheem Sterling, shot over the bar while off-balance.
Despite the pressure from Atalanta, Arsenal’s defense held firm. William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães were solid at the back, while Raya’s heroics ensured that the Gunners left Italy with a valuable point. The draw represents a solid start to Arsenal’s Champions League campaign, especially against a tactically strong Atalanta side.
