Arsenal leverage corner mastery and Raya heroics to claim crucial 2-1 win over Chelsea and extend Premier League lead

Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium in a thrilling London match, reclaiming the Premier League lead by five points. Goals from William Saliba and Jurriën Timber — both powered headers from corners — proved decisive, while Pedro Neto’s red card late in the second half tipped the balance firmly in Arsenal’s favour.

Mikel Arteta’s side, unchanged from their north London derby victory, extended their unbeaten run against Chelsea to 11 matches and inched closer to potential title glory with nine games remaining.

Arsenal set the tone from the first whistle, pressing high and testing Chelsea’s fragile backline. Viktor Gyökeres nearly capitalised on a miscontrolled ball from goalkeeper Robert Sánchez inside five minutes. Eberechi Eze and Martin Zubimendi also threatened, forcing Chelsea into early defensive scrambles.

The breakthrough came in the 21st minute via Arsenal’s set-piece expertise. Bukayo Saka delivered a perfectly curled corner into the box.

Gabriel Magalhães flicked the ball across goal, and centre-back William Saliba powered a close-range header past Sánchez — deflecting off Mamadou Sarr — for his first Premier League goal of the season. It was a moment of pure aerial dominance from the French international.

Chelsea, managed by Liam Rosenior, responded with determination. Reece James’ deliveries from the right caused issues, and just before half-time, the visitors equalised.

James whipped in a corner, and Piero Hincapié’s attempted clearance looped into his own net, cruelly gifting Chelsea a 1-1 scoreline at the break.

Timber’s Winner and Neto’s Dismissal

The second half began brightly for Chelsea, forcing two excellent saves from David Raya — first denying Enzo Fernández’s low strike, then tipping João Pedro’s header over the bar.

Arsenal’s set-piece supremacy struck again in the 66th minute. Declan Rice delivered a pinpoint corner from the left, and Jurriën Timber ghosted into space to nod home from close range.

The Dutchman’s celebration sparked wild scenes at the Emirates as Arsenal’s 16th goal from a corner this season matched the Premier League single-season record — with games to spare.

Just four minutes later, Chelsea’s Pedro Neto, already booked, was sent off for a second yellow following a foul on Gabriel Martinelli. Referee Darren England brandished the red card decisively, leaving Chelsea with ten men for the final 20 minutes.

Even with a man advantage, Chelsea remained dangerous. Moises Caicedo fired over a powerful effort, and Alejandro Garnacho’s late cross was spectacularly tipped away by Raya at full stretch. In stoppage time, Liam Delap thought he had equalised after Raya saved a bicycle kick from Pedro, but the offside flag correctly denied Chelsea.

Arsenal closed out the match professionally, securing three vital points and maintaining control of their Premier League destiny.

Post-Match Reaction

Arteta’s side showed the character expected of title contenders. “We knew it would be tough, but our set-piece work and response after conceding was outstanding,” a dressing room insider said.

Timber added: “Corners are a huge part of our game — today they won it for us.”

Chelsea lamented Neto’s sending-off, but the Blues’ spirit, particularly in the second half, earned praise despite their disciplinary issues this season.

Arsenal travel to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League before focusing on the FA Cup fifth round against Mansfield Town. Chelsea must regroup quickly as they chase a top-four finish.

This gritty, set-piece-driven victory reinforces Arsenal’s title credentials. Five points clear and in control, the Gunners are looking every inch like Premier League favourites once more.
