Louis Saha criticizes Arsenal signing of Gyökeres, questioning his fit in Arteta’s tactical setup despite early goal-scoring success.
Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha criticizes Arsenal signing of Viktor Gyökeres, expressing surprise over the club’s decision to invest heavily in a player he describes as “not skilful.” Despite Gyökeres’ impressive goal-scoring record at Sporting CP and a strong start in the Premier League, Saha questioned whether the Swedish forward aligns with Arsenal’s traditional attacking style.
Arsenal signed Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP for a reported fee of £55 million, with potential add-ons bringing the total to £63.5 million. Gyökeres arrived with an impressive record—97 goals in 102 games for Sporting and 15 goals in 28 appearances for Sweden.
However, Louis Saha criticized the move, stating:
“I’m surprised in some way – because he is definitely not a skilful player,” Saha told Flashscore.
Saha Questions Gyökeres’ Playing Style
Saha believes Gyökeres’ direct approach contrasts with Arsenal’s usual attacking philosophy. According to Saha, Arsenal typically favors strikers who can create chances independently, like Gabriel Jesus. Gyökeres, in contrast, relies on early service and quick finishes.
“He has a direct profile that Arsenal are not well known for. It can work… but I’m a bit surprised,” Saha added.
Early Success for Gyökeres at Arsenal
Despite the criticism, Gyökeres has made a strong start at Arsenal, scoring three goals in his first four Premier League matches. His performances suggest that manager Mikel Arteta may be shifting Arsenal’s tactical approach to accommodate a more vertical style of play.
