Italian legend Leonardo Bonucci expressed his disappointment over Juventus’s failure to sign Riccardo Calafiori, who appears to be on his way to Arsenal.
The 22-year-old left-back impressed at Euro 2024, sparking interest from clubs like Juventus and Real Madrid. Arsenal, however, appear to have won the race, reportedly agreeing to a €45 million transfer fee with Bologna.
Juventus were keen on retaining the 22-year-old talent in Italy. Club legend Bonucci expressed regret about Juve missing out on the opportunity to sign a player he believes has the potential to shine for both his club and his country for many years to come.
“Calafiori? I’m disappointed about his transfer. I wished we could have welcomed him at Juventus,” Bonucci shared with Sky Sports Italia.
‘He’s a defender who’s a little different to what we’re used to seeing. He’s skillful, has great character, and would have been a great fit.
“We’re letting go of an exceptional player who I believe will be a pivotal figure for the national team for the next 15 years.”
Calafiori’s Euro 2024 performance was a breakout moment. His impact included a crucial assist and composed defensive displays. Before the Euros, he had only made two appearances for Italy, but his strong 2023-24 season with Bologna (37 appearances, 2 goals, 5 assists) showcased his talent.
Arsenal had the best defense in the Premier League last season, conceding only 29 goals. The Gunners see Calafiori as a versatile asset due to his ability to play both center and left back, which fits with manager Mikel Arteta’s tactical approach.
Although Juventus was initially considered the frontrunner to sign Calafiori but missed out on signing as Arsenal secured the highly-rated defender instead, leaving Bonucci disappointed.
