Kevin, who had always been a huge Arsenal fan, became the country’s most prolific teenage striker after joining our youth setup in 1985 at the age of fifteen.
In1988, he made 53 appearances for the youth and reserve teams, scoring 61 goals and winning the FA Youth Cup. He then made his first-team debut not long after, at the age of 18, ironically against Everton, another club he would go on to represent with great distinction.
His breakout season with Arsenal came in 1990–1991, following fruitful loan stints with Leyton Orient and Leicester City. He helped win the league title at the tender age of 21 while playing up front alongside Alan Smith and Paul Merson, scoring eight goals in a 10-match streak towards the end of the season. He was an integral member of our championship-winning team that dropped only one league game all season and was already an England under-21 international.
In the next season, he teamed up with new recruit Ian Wright and scored ten goals again. In 1992–1993, he won a record-tying double (the FA Cup and the League Cup)—the first of its kind in English football.
In 1993–1994, the muscular and speedy forward scored 19 goals for us, including the game-winning goal in the European Cup Winner’s Cup semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain. He started every minute of the final match against Parma, and that amazing night in Copenhagen was our taste of European triumph.
Kevin played with Arsenal for one more season before leaving for Nottingham Forest in 1995. He made 228 appearances for our first squad and scored 59 goals. He is now tied with Liam Brady, another No. 7 from his youth team days, for 40th place on our all-time scoring list, with the current incumbent, Bukayo Saka, and one other player ahead of him.
Kevin won the Division One title in 1998 during his three years with Forest. He then signed with Everton after a brief stint with Turkish side Trabzonspor. In addition to becoming a fan favorite, Kevin played more than 150 times for the Merseyside club. His goal scoring streak towards the conclusion of the 1998–99 season was a major factor in the club’s escape from relegation. His outstanding play in April earned him the title of Premier League Player of the Month.
He had brief stints as a player for West Bromwich Albion and Cardiff City before retiring to a successful media career. His former teammates at Arsenal always welcomed him back with open arms.
His lasting friendships with many club members continued from his early days at Highbury, and he was much loved and respected by everybody.
As a forward who most recently played in the Championship for Stoke City last season, Tyrese, who is Kevin’s son, is carrying on the footballing tradition in England. All of Kevin’s loved ones are in our prayers and thoughts during this terrible time.
