Kai Havertz scores a late penalty against former club Bayer Leverkusen to help Arsenal salvage a crucial Champions League draw.
Kai Havertz struck late penalty goal against his former club to rescue Arsenal in a tense 1-1 Champions League draw with Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena.
Arsenal looked set to suffer their first defeat of the European campaign after Robert Andrich fired Leverkusen ahead early in the second half. But Havertz kept his composure in the 89th minute, converting a crucial penalty to level the tie before the return leg in north London.
The result keeps Arsenal firmly alive in the last-16 clash and extends their unbeaten run in this season’s Champions League.
Arsenal began the match with confidence despite making several changes to the side that won in the FA Cup at the weekend.
Mikel Arteta’s team dominated possession early and pressed aggressively in Leverkusen’s half. However, they struggled to convert control into clear scoring opportunities.
Their best chance arrived in the 19th minute. Bukayo Saka surged down the right and found Jurrien Timber inside the box. Timber delivered a low cross that Eberechi Eze cleverly dummied, allowing Viktor Gyokeres to hold up play before laying the ball into Gabriel Martinelli’s path.
Martinelli unleashed a powerful shot that crashed against the crossbar, with the rebound narrowly evading Saka.
Leverkusen created little before halftime, and David Raya dealt comfortably with the few attempts that reached his goal.
Andrich Strikes Moments After Restart
Leverkusen changed the tempo immediately after the break.
Within seconds of the restart, Martin Terrier forced Raya into a superb save with a header. The resulting corner proved decisive.
Alejandro Grimaldo delivered a dangerous inswinging cross to the far post where Robert Andrich rose above his marker and powered a header past Raya.
The goal gave the German side a 1-0 lead and marked the first time Arsenal had trailed in the Champions League this season.
Kai Havertz Late Penalty Kick Secures a Point Against Leverkusen
Arteta responded by turning to his bench.
Noni Madueke replaced Saka shortly after the hour mark and immediately added pace and direct running to Arsenal’s attack.
With fifteen minutes remaining, Havertz entered the match against the club where he began his professional career.
As the match approached full time, Madueke burst into the penalty area after beating two defenders. Leverkusen substitute Malik Tillman clipped the winger, and the referee awarded a penalty following a VAR review.
Havertz stepped up calmly and slotted the ball into the bottom corner with his left foot.
Out of respect for his former club, the German forward chose not to celebrate.
Second Leg Now Perfectly Balanced
Arsenal will feel relieved to leave Germany with the tie level after a frustrating performance.
The Gunners managed only a handful of shots but showed resilience when the pressure increased late in the match.
Leverkusen may feel unfortunate about the penalty decision, yet they struggled to threaten consistently after taking the lead.
