Jamie Redknapp criticizes Mikel Arteta over his risky decision to start Bukayo Saka against Port Vale despite recent injury concerns.
Jamie Redknapp has publicly criticizes Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta for what he described as a “risky” decision to start Bukayo Saka in the Carabao Cup clash against League One side Port Vale. The match, held at Vale Park, saw Saka return to the starting lineup despite recently recovering from a hamstring injury that had sidelined him for several key fixtures.
Saka had missed Premier League matches against Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, as well as a Champions League win over Athletic Bilbao. His return came during Arsenal’s draw with Manchester City, where he was cautiously introduced off the bench. However, Arteta’s choice to start him just days later raised eyebrows among pundits and fans alike.
Redknapp, speaking on Sky Sports, expressed his concern:
“It’s certainly a risk. When you’ve had a player who’s had a hamstring injury like he has, not that long ago, any time you play in a game that’s less important, it doesn’t make any sense to me”.
He emphasized that Arsenal had other options and questioned the necessity of fielding Saka in a lower-stakes cup match, especially with a crucial Premier League fixture against Newcastle looming.
Arteta’s Justification
Arteta defended his decision, stating that Saka needed minutes to regain rhythm and confidence.
“He’s demanding that as well. You just need to get in the rhythm, repeat actions and exposure,” Arteta explained in his pre-match press conference.
The manager made nine changes to his lineup, including several players starting for the first time, but maintained that Saka’s inclusion was part of a calculated plan to ease him back into full fitness.

Redknapp’s Broader Concerns
Redknapp’s criticism wasn’t just about Saka—it reflected a broader concern about Arsenal’s injury management. With Noni Madueke also sidelined, Saka remains the club’s only natural right winger, making his fitness even more critical.
“I think you have to be so careful because he’s so important to this Arsenal side,” Redknapp warned.
While Arteta’s intent may have been to accelerate Saka’s recovery through match exposure, Redknapp’s comments highlight the delicate balance managers must strike between player development and injury risk. With Arsenal’s season ambitions hanging in the balance, every decision—especially involving key players like Saka—will be under intense scrutiny.
