Jamie Carragher Says Arsenal Lag Behind Liverpool and Chelsea in Transfer Strategy

Mikel Arteta’s conservative tactics

Jamie Carragher criticizes Arsenal transfer strategy, saying it’s weaker than Liverpool and Chelsea in player sales.

Jamie Carragher has criticized Arsenal transfer strategy, claiming the club falls short compared to Premier League rivals Liverpool and Chelsea. The former Liverpool defender believes Arsenal’s inability to sell players effectively is a major weakness.

Arsenal spent over £250 million this summer on new signings, including Viktor Gyokeres, Eberechi Eze, and Martin Zubimendi. However, the club earned less than £10 million from player sales. Key players like Thomas Partey and Jorginho left on free transfers, while others such as Fabio Vieira and Reiss Nelson went out on loan.

In contrast, Liverpool and Chelsea have generated significant income from player sales. Liverpool reportedly brought in nearly £200 million, while Chelsea earned close to £300 million. Arsenal’s highest sale remains Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s £35 million move to Liverpool in 2017.

Carragher’s Attacks Arsenal’s Transfer Approach

Jamie Carragher shared his thoughts on CBS Sports after Arsenal’s Champions League win over Athletic Bilbao. He praised the team’s depth but questioned their financial efficiency.

“Arsenal don’t sell well. They don’t bring money in like Liverpool and Chelsea do,” Carragher said.

He added that Arsenal’s squad resembles those of elite clubs like Real Madrid or PSG. According to Carragher, this level of investment demands major trophies—not just domestic cups.

Arsenal’s current approach raises concerns about long-term sustainability. Rival clubs have questioned the club’s player valuations, suggesting Arsenal often overpays for signings while failing to profit from departures.

Improving their selling strategy could help Arsenal balance their books and compete more effectively. With high expectations this season, manager Mikel Arteta faces pressure to deliver results that match the club’s spending.
