Jamie Carragher warns Arsenal that with Mikel Arteta’s future uncertain, the pressure to win silverware next season grows.
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has weighed in on Mikel Arteta’s future uncertain at Arsenal, suggesting that the Spanish manager could face the sack if he fails to secure silverware next season. His comments come after Arsenal’s disappointing campaign, which saw them fall short in multiple competitions, including the Premier League and Champions League.
Despite Arteta’s efforts to transform Arsenal into a title-winning side, the club has now gone five consecutive seasons without a major trophy. Their latest setback came in the Champions League, where they were eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals. Additionally, they lost the Premier League title to Liverpool and suffered early exits in domestic cup competitions.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher expressed his concerns about Arsenal’s trajectory under Arteta. He acknowledged the progress made by the club but warned that another trophyless season could put Arteta’s job at risk. “This season felt like it should have been their season,” Carragher stated. “There’s no doubt next season the pressure will be on Mikel Arteta massively in terms of winning something and winning something big”.
Carragher further explained that Arsenal’s board might face a difficult decision if Arteta fails to deliver silverware. “They won’t want to change their manager, but there will be that many people saying: five or six years without a trophy. They will be looking at how many managers can make that next step”.
While Carragher acknowledged the pressure on Arteta, he also cautioned against making a managerial change too hastily. He pointed to Chelsea’s struggles as an example of how frequent managerial changes can destabilize a club. “Arsenal could easily become what Chelsea are right now. They could go from a team coming second year in, year out to a team that doesn’t actually get into the Champions League”.
Arteta’s future at Arsenal will likely depend on the club’s performance next season. If he can guide the team to a major trophy, he may solidify his position. However, another season without silverware could force the Arsenal board to reconsider their options.
With the pressure mounting, Arteta will need to prove that he can take Arsenal to the next level. Whether he succeeds or not remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—next season will be a defining moment in his managerial career that’s according to Jamie Carragher.
