Jamie Carragher Predicts Arsenal Could Struggle Under Pressure in Title Race

Jamie Carragher Arsenal's Pressure

Jamie Carragher warns Arsenal’s title hopes could crumble under mounting pressure despite their strong start to the Premier League season.

Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal’s Premier League title ambitions could collapse under the psychological pressure of expectation rather than competition from their rivals. Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, the former Liverpool defender analyzed the Gunners’ impressive start and warned that mental fatigue may be their biggest threat.

Arsenal currently lead the Premier League after seven matches in the 2025–26 campaign. They have finished runners-up for three straight seasons, prompting fans to hope this will finally be their year.

However, Carragher cautioned that pressure could derail their progress, saying:

“The only thing that can stop Arsenal is the same thing that has stopped others before: the pressure in March or April when you want it so much, and the fans want it so much.”

The Liverpool legend believes Arsenal’s long wait for a league title since 2004 adds emotional weight that could test their composure.

Liverpool and City Still Threaten

Carragher also stressed that Liverpool and Manchester City remain serious title contenders. Liverpool, the reigning champions, are just one point behind Arsenal despite inconsistent results against Crystal Palace, Chelsea, and Galatasaray.

He predicted Liverpool would grow stronger later in the campaign:

“If Liverpool are five or six points behind by February, I think they’ll get better.”

Carragher referenced Sir Alex Ferguson’s strategy of staying within touching distance by January as a model for success.

While praising Arsenal’s strong squad depth, Carragher questioned whether they possess the mental strength required to sustain a title push. Liverpool, he argued, have the advantage of experience in handling high-pressure run-ins.

He also emphasized that both clubs will inevitably lose points, and how they react will determine who wins.

Neville’s Confident Counterpoint

Gary Neville disagreed with Carragher’s assessment, insisting Arsenal are ready to go all the way. Neville pointed to their consistent performances and high points totals over the past few seasons as proof they can finally lift the Premier League trophy.

Carragher, however, stood firm, believing Liverpool’s mentality and resilience could make the difference down the stretch.

Arsenal’s next test comes against Fulham, while Liverpool prepare for a showdown with Manchester United. With both clubs chasing the top spot, Carragher’s comments have reignited the debate about who can handle the pressure best.

The race for the Premier League crown, it seems, will be as much psychological as it is tactical.
