Jamie Carragher has compared the excellence of previous title-winning Arsenal squads to the current crop, which has consistently fallen short of Premier League success.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has identified three Arsenal players he believes are hindering the Gunners’ chances of winning the Premier League title this season. Speaking on Sky Sports‘ Monday Night Football, Carragher pointed out that while Arsenal has shown promise, their current squad lacks the firepower needed to challenge for the title.
Carragher compared the current Arsenal team to the legendary 1997-98 squad that won the Premier League, highlighting the difference in quality. “They had [Marc] Overmars, [Nicolas] Anelka, and Dennis Bergkamp,” Carragher said. “This team, at the moment, is playing with [Gabriel] Martinelli, [Leandro] Trossard, and [Kai] Havertz. It’s not enough.”
Carragher’s comments come after Arsenal’s recent draw with Aston Villa, where they threw away a two-goal lead to settle for a 2-2 draw. The result has added to the growing concerns about Arsenal’s consistency and ability to close out games.
While Martinelli and Havertz have shown flashes of brilliance, their combined league goal tally of 18 goals this season falls short of the prolific scoring needed to win the title. Carragher believes that without a more formidable attacking lineup, Arsenal’s title hopes may remain unfulfilled.
