Jamie Carragher has urged managers to ban goalkeepers from playing the ball into midfielders running towards their own goal when under pressure, after seeing Arsenal concede a goal as a consequence of that tactic at Newcastle.
Jamie Carragher has advised managers to prohibit goalkeepers from passing the ball to midfielders running towards their own goal when under pressure, following Arsenal’s goal conceded against Newcastle. The incident in question involved Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya’s careless pass that led to Newcastle’s second goal.
The match, which ended in a 4-0 aggregate win for Newcastle, saw the Magpies secure their place in the final. However, it was Raya’s pass to Declan Rice that caught the attention of Carragher and many football fans. The pass was intercepted by Fabian Schär, who then set up Anthony Gordon to score the decisive goal.

Carragher, a former Liverpool defender and current football pundit, took to social media to express his frustration. He argued that goalkeepers should be banned from playing such passes into midfield players, as it poses a significant risk and can lead to costly mistakes.
‘Keepers need to be banned from playing those passes into midfield players.’ Carragher posted on X:
